Eritema nodoso

Abstract

The following titling work details a case presented at the Riobamba General Teaching Provincial Hospital. This is a 46-year-old female patient, mestizo, without any significant personal and family pathological history, who came to the clinic for presenting bilateral pain and edema at the level of the left calf, the physical examination showed the presence of a painful erythematous nodule on palpation at the level of the posterior aspect of the left leg; due to the symptoms presented by the patient, a skin biopsy was requested at the site of the lesion, which reported by means of an anatomopathological study, foci of inflammatory lymphocyte cells that extend to the fatty lobule; as well as occasional histiocytes. Outpatient symptomatic treatment was decided for management, control, and follow-up to arrive at a diagnosis of origin. As initial treatment for erythema nodosum, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was decided; in the case, the patient showed a favourable response to treatment, clinical improvement was evidenced during subsequent controls, and she reported a decrease in symptoms. It is concluded that the clinical picture of the patient is of unusual presentation since the predominant characteristic is at the level of the pretibial region. To arrive at the appropriate diagnosis in this type of pathology, it is necessary to carry out a histopathological study and its clinical correlation. Health personnel is advised to train on this disease and self-care to avoid possible complications in their state of health.
