Abstract

This research proposes to measure the sustainability of tourism in Riobamba city through environmental tourism indicators and develop a proposal for improvement based on the analysis of two international indicator systems such as the European Tourist Indicators System, and the Indicators System of Sustainable Development for WTO Tourist Destinations. It is selecting from these last ten indicators applicable to the reality of Riobamba city, of which five were raised in tourist accommodation establishments, travel agencies, and tourist transport, through fieldwork with the help of a survey. And the other five through the synthesis of technical reports from GADM Riobamba percentages are those of tourist certification, personnel in charge of environmental management and sustainability, and training of staff. At the same time, those with higher rates are selective garbage collection and organized garbage collection service. From all the results of the indicators, a proposal for improvement was developed using the methodology of the logical framework (4x4), establishing sustainable tourism development as a goal, as a purpose the permanent monitoring of tourist establishments and as strategies, the application of systems of continuous improvement, training of tourist establishments, improving tourişm promotion strategies and improving health management; In addition to establishing the necessary activities, desirable results, budget, and assumptions. It is concluded that many indicators can be applied to the reality of tourism in the country that will provide useful information for the development obtaining that the indicators with the lowest of sustainable tourism with international standards.
